Help Promote Rowing for Teens in Our Community

South Eugene Rowing Club (SERC) is a self-funded organization providing Eugene-area 8th grade and High School students an experience of rowing on a crew. In rowing, no one individual stands out; everyone on the team must contribute to be successful. During Spring and Fall seasons the rowers spend five days a week at Dexter Lake and one day on ergs and strength training at South Eugene High School.

Our club emphasizes teamwork, respect and integrity. Our rowers are active in other school activities and in the community.

Donations can be designated for use towards a specific program or to be used where most needed. To our donors we commit that gifts to SERC directly support our rowing programs and are used only for the following:

Rower Financial Aid

Although rowing is an expensive sport, we would like to offer the opportunity to join our club to any teen-age individual in the Eugene/Springfield metro area who is interested. As financial aid funds become available we conduct a formal review of families who have expressed an interest in our club but don’t have the means to cover the full cost of membership. Once a family is selected we work in partnership with the family to develop an equitable share of expenses so their rower is able to participate in our club.

Regatta Entry Fees

Regatta entry fees are determined by the number of rowers entered in events, the number of boats entered, or both. As there are many expenses associated with hosting a regatta, and we participate in six or seven regattas each year, the entry fees are considerable. We use donation funds to help offset these expenses.

Nutrition Tent at Regattas

At each regatta we operate a Nutrition Tent to provide hot, healthy meals to our rowers. The Nutrition Tent is run by parent volunteers but the cost of food is borne by the club.

Travel for Rowers

Since we have a relationship with the Eugene 4J school district we are able to utilize district school bus transportation to our practices at Dexter Lake. Although we transport our team to regattas using personal vehicles, we have elected to pay for the transportation to practice so the team can travel together. Water practice takes place at Dexter Lake (approx. 30 miles from Eugene) and costs $120 for each round-trip.

Equipment Maintenance

A rowing shell receives some amount of wear-and-tear each time it is used: when it is removed from the storage rack; when it is placed in and removed from the water; while it is being used in the water; when it is loaded and unloaded from our boat trailer to attend a regatta. Our boats are several years old and require additional replacement parts and maintenance.

We are also building funds for the following long-term needs:

Dexter Boathouse Improvements

We lease our boathouse space from another rowing organization. We are always looking for ways to improve our boat storage and maintenance area.

Replacement Shells

Our current inventory of boats is several years old. Although they are all still serviceable, we would like to obtain a new shell so that more of our rowers can be on the water at regattas. A new shell can cost upwards of $35,000. As an alternative, we would try to find a relatively new used shell in the $10,000 – $12,000 range.

Your donation will help ensure that we can continue to provide a unique experience for our rowers. Thank you!
